Christopher Latham Sholes got inspired by the need to speed up typing and document writting. It was driven by a magazine article, a need to solve mechanical jamming, and earlier personal devices. Because Christopher Latham was a printer editor and a journalist he wanted a faster way of typing.
During the 1870's till the 1819's the Sholes and Glidden Typewriter sold for $125 each. In those days to make writting affordable for small businesses Index Typewriter were also introduced costing $5 to $40 each To compare the cost of the typewriter in the late 1800's $125 was valued roughly half an average workers annual salary making typewriters a luxurious office equipment rather than a normal consumer item. In todays value it is around $3000 each.
Due to the commercial of failure of earlier machines like Austin Burt's 1820's typographer the Christopher Sholes team were able to file a U.S Patent No.79265 in 1873. A patent is a legal document granted by a government that gives an intentor exclusive rights to their invention. Mr Sholes earned $12000 for his share of the typewriter patent when sold to Remington Arms Company. Today the original QWERTY design by Mr Sholes remains the global standard for computers and phones.
