Discover and craft over 500 weapons of magic, ranged, melee and summon varieties, as well as armor, and use them to battle hundreds of different enemies. Soon you'll be going head-to-head with any of a dozen enormous bosses. Go fishing, ride a mount, find Floating Islands, build houses for helpful NPCs, and much, much more.

Bosses

Bosses are aggressive, resilient enemies that offer a substantial challenge to players. Defeating a boss is usually instrumental in advancing the game in some way or another, for example, granting the player a new material for a pickaxe of a higher tier. Each has its own particular way of being summoned. For example, most bosses have associated summoning items that can be used to spawn them manually under certain conditions, while there are others that will appear after the player interacts in a certain way with the environment.

Classes

Terraria doesn't exactly have a formal class or leveling system. However, weapons can be grouped into four distinct categories based on their damage type – melee, ranged, magic, and summoning. Each class has its strengths and weaknesses and has a wide variety of weapons to choose from.

Equipment

Items are entities that are among the most basic components of Terraria. There are 5000+ items within the game; specifically 5455 items. The player can interact with most items by using, consuming, or placing them. Items are always in one of two forms: "dropped", i.e. being part of the world, or in an inventory pertaining to a player, NPC vendor, or storage item. Dropped items can usually be picked up by the player to move them into their inventory, and they can usually be dropped out of the inventory again.

Npc

NPCs are friendly automated non-playable characters that provide services to players Standing near an NPC and pressing Interact will open a dialogue window with one or more options for the player to select. Most NPCs are vendors, displaying a shop inventory when the "Shop" option is selected. They sell items to players in exchange for coins, and can be sold items by a player to obtain coins. Some NPCs also have other options that perform other functions.

Progression

The player explores a new (or changed) section of the world. This area offers new dangers, especially new enemies, but those enemies also drop new resources. The environment will also offer new items, including local chests with rare items and even new ores in some occasions. The player uses these to upgrade their equipment, until they are ready for... ... a boss fight, with occasional events for variety. Each new boss and event provides a uniquely-challenging fight. Defeating the boss or event provides still more equipment and materials. New NPCs may appear, and existing NPCs can sell new items. Once a player has defeated each boss or event for the first time, it can later be re-summoned for more drops, thus becoming a potential resource. The items gained from the boss fight/event will again improve the player's equipment, but will also present a new challenge, such as access to a new area, or new enemies in a previously explored area. This returns the player to step 1.
